"The Librarian"
"Librarians save lives by handing the right book at the right time to a child in need"
Sarah Elizabeth Atkins made her advent into the world on June 4, 1931. On January 5, 2024, her departure was, as she lived her life, quiet,, serene, elegant, and without a great deal of fanfare. Sarah Elizabeth Atkins was "The Librarian."
Born to Winfred and Louise Atkins, Sarah was a graduate of Morehuse Parish High School. She was employed for years as a Morehouse Parish librarian. She took a great deal of pride in her position. She loved opening up brave new worlds to young and old alike. Her soft smile, her gentle demeanor, and her patience when dealing with children as well as the elderly, endeared her to so many, who would go there to escape the world outside. In the library, people could leave the drudgery of everyday life, and escape to a world of fantasy and wonder. And, Sarah was there to offer marvelous suggestions to take them where ever they wanted to go. How and why? Because reading was also her passion.
Known as "Tee Sarah" and "Sadie Girl" by her friends and relatives, she enjoyed spending quality time with her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who frequented "The Compound." The gathering place for holidays and special gatherings, there was always room for one more "cousin" or "friend" to enjoy delicious home cooked food or a friendly game of something.
Sarah leaves to cherish her soft smile, her gentle ways, five grateful siblings: Michael Atkins, Bastrop, LA, Princella Thaxton, Bastrop, LA; Emma Kidd, Shreveport, LA, Annie Atkins, Joyce Lee, all of Bastrop, LA; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will always remember "The Librarian."
“A librarian’s heart is filled with the stories of countless lives, and their hands hold the keys to open those narratives to the world.”
