"She Never Met A Stranger"

It was Thursday, May 16, 1957 when the premier center for young children, owned by Mrs. Mozell  Burrell prepared for their annual field trip.  Even though she was great with child, Mrs. Burrell was still working.  She wouldn’t dare disappoint her children.  But, she suddenly found out she had no“say so” in the matter.  She had to disappoint her children, children who would remember May 16, 1957 for years to come. On this special day, Nathaniel and Mozell Burrell were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. They named her Aundra Levern Burrell.  Aundra would follow in her mother’s footsteps: “loving children, wanting them to be their very best, and demanding that they never settle for less than the best.  Many of Mrs. Burrell’s kindergarten students would often recount the story to Aundra.

Aundra grew up in a family filled with love.  She always had children around, so there was never time to be bored.  Church, school and community activities kept her busy.

When Aundra was in ninth grade she met a cute young man  whose last name was somewhat similar to hers.  His name: Carl Bershell; her name Aundra Burrell; a nice ring to both. Maybe; just maybe!  On July 27, 1975, shortly after her high school graduation, eighteen year old Aundra Levern Burrell became Mrs. Carl Bershell. Carl and Aundra were married for over forty years.  They were blessed with four children: Carlett, Keano, Mario, and Carl.

Aundra loved the Lord. She loved children. Her journey began at St. John Missionary Baptist Church but she later moved her membership with Carl to West End Church of God in Christ. She was known as “Big Sister Sunshine” throughout her district and the church.  She never met a stranger and always greeted those she knew and did not know with her award-winning smile. Education was important to her. She receiving her Associate’s Degree in Business from Louisiana Business College and The Bible College.

Because of her love for style and “bling,” looking beautiful was always important to Aundra.  She graduated from Bastrop Beauty School.  She made sure she was always dressed and her hair perfectly done. Known lovingly as “Dre or Dre Tee,: Aundra was the life of a party, often tried to "back it up," and loved Cokes (although Keano frowned  on them).  She had  a “partner in  crime”  however, (Keyshia) who would sneak them in for her. Cheesy popcorn was also one of her favorites and she loved online shopping in  Temu and Shein. Now, Aundra was a religious lady, but had no problem letting you know if you displeased her. She often made plans to take trips without telling the driver THEY were going. “That’s just the way she was and she did it with a smile.”

On September 19, 2025, Aundra Levern Burrell Bershell, quietly left this world as we know it, and traveled to that mystical realm “where she would “NEVER GROW OLD.”  She leaves to cherish fond memories, her loving husband, her grateful children and their spouses, her grandchildren, and a special “great grandchild” (God allowed her to hold before leaving), cousins, godchildren, bonus children, and friends who will forever cherish the special lady who “Never Met A Stranger.”
