“A Mother’s Love”
“She opens her mouth in wisdom; kindly instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Proverbs 31:26-29
Friday, December 25, 1931, Christmas, was over! Joy was still in the air even though folks returned gifts, children played with their toys or rode their shiny new bikes in the small hamlet of Perryville, LA. On Monday, December 28, 1931, Lucetta Logan and Elisha Blocker, Sr. received a very special gift. On this day, Betty Louise Blocker became the final piece of the wonderful Blocker household puzzle
Betty was a precocious child. Even as a little girl, she was a real "people person." She loved to learn. She attended school in a little one-room schoolhouse in the small hamlet of Perryville. She would eventually move to Morehouse High School in Bastrop, a neighboring town.
Now, Betty was no stranger to work. From Dixie Cleaners in Bastrop to an elevator operator in Boston to General Motors where she worked for over twenty years, Betty used her people skills and her working ability to make amazing strides in life. Betty also had an entrepreneurial spirit, owning Po’ Folks Grocery that she operated with her husband, the late David Sawyer.
Church was a vital part of her life. When she was just a little child, she and her family attended Mt. Nebo in Perryville. She then joined the New Morning Star Baptist Church, and finally Word of Life Ministries where she remained a faithful and devoted member.
Betty loved to travel. She would join her family as they toured many states. The traveling “bug” led her to England, Scotland and Wales and the United Kingdom.
On June 16, 2024, with loved ones around her bedside, Betty Louise Blocker Richardson Sawyer bade farewell to this world, and went home to be with her God. Her three siblings: William Creft, Sr., Elisha Blocker, Jr. and Arjetta Brown preceded her in death.
Missing her guidance, and her beautiful smile are her grateful daughter, Carolyn Richardson Atubeh (widow of Anthony Atubeh), her grandchildren, Lydia and Caleb Atubeh; two goddaughters, Angela Slater and AI Cox; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Betty was the epitome of generosity, compassion, and love. It was her mission in life to make a difference in the lives of others. Thank you, Mrs. Betty Sawyer, for showing us that life is precious, and we should make the most of it by loving unconditionally.
“Spread your wings, Betty, and fly proudly. You’ve earned them.’
“Rest In Love, Betty”
