In the small southeastern city of Lafayette, Louisiana, Elizabeth Scates Gordon and James D. Smith became parents of a bouncing baby boy. They named him Carl Shabhaskin Smith. He was reared by Eva and Quenon Kyles. As a child Carl attended St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
Carl attended Grambling State University where he played the tuba in Grambling's band. After graduation he moved to Dallas, Texas, and began a career with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
His laughter was infectious. He loved to joke around with family and friends, Carl loved life and will be missed by all who knew him,
