"So Was Eddie Dovall Spencer"

“Everybody’s Mama”

"Strength and honor are her clothing; she is confident about the future. Her mouth is full of wisdom; kindly teaching is on her tongue. She is vigilant over the activities of her household laziness.  Proverbs 31:  25-27

It was the last day of the month, a Saturday to be exact, in the small hamlet of Mer Rouge, Louisiana.  On February 28, 1959, Rosie Lavall and Ed Hicks gave birth to a precious baby girl.  Melvin Capers also reared her. They named her Eddie Mae.    "So was Eddie Dovall Spencer!"

Eddie grew up and when it was time, she attended St. Matthews School.  Eddie was a “homebody,” by nature.  Traveling here and there, and shopping were not things that really interested her. What she really loved was taking care of her family, which included her seven grandbabies, her four precious “babies,” Keyshaunda, Tamika, Travis, and Erica. She took up the Motherhood also by rearing her brother, Frankie Lavall and Douglas Lavall. “She loved taking care of children, in fact she was “Everybody’s Momma.” She loved all seven of her Grands as if she was their mother.

On March 27, 1983, Eddie Mae Dovall became Mrs. Jim Spencer. Eddie also loved to cook.   Meals at her house could easily be called “a feast.” Keyshaunda is following in her mother’s footsteps Her food is thought to taste just like Eddie’s. So was Eddie Dovall Spencer

Ms. Eddie was not one to mince words.  She was the “Go To Person.”  If you had a problem, you could talk to her about anything.  Her wisdom with wit was amazing. A strong, loving, and kind matriarch with a heart full of kindness and a head full of wisdom. So was Eddie Dovall Spencer.

Now, although she was considered to be impatient, she had a few sayings that, when she said them, you knew exactly what she meant. Sayings like: “Too much of anything is not good for you,”  “It Ain’t Gon’Be Right, But It’s Gon. Be Tight,” but by far her favorite,” “The Sooner, The Better.’ Eddie loved surprises, including planning and preparing, for her own “surprise birthday party.” She could often be overhead inviting neighbors and friends to her birthday party. So was Eddie Dovall Spencer

On November 15, about 5:38 (that’s when  Keyshaunda glanced at her watch) Eddie Dovall Spencer closed her eyes, left this world bound for Glory. “So was Eddie Dovall Spencer.”

She leaves to cherish her memory, her smile, her words of wisdom, and guidance,  her husband, Jim Spencer, Bastrop, LA, four grateful children: Travis Dovall, Bastrop, LA, Keyshaunda Taylor, Bastrop, LA, Tamika Young, Dallas, TX, and Erica Dovall, Bastrop, LA, one brother, Frankie Lavall, three sisters: Fannie Atkins, Otis Brooks, and Betty Carter, all of Bastrop, seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
