"The Matriarch"

Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. Psalm 71:18

September 16, 1927 was a very special day in the lives of Mary Lou Williams Johnson and Charlie Johnson.  It was on this day they were blessed with a pretty baby girl. They named her Emma Lee Johnson.

On February 15, 1943, Emma became the beautiful bride of the handsome Brisco (Suga) Burrell. They were blessed with seven children: John Willie, Edwina, Donnie Jean, Mary, Brisco, Jr., Sherman, and baby, Linda. They cared for many siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, children, and grandchildren. Their home was always bustling with activity and the laughter of children. Their home was always filled with LOVE.

Emma was known for her ability to design, make, and alter clothing for the ladies of Bastrop.   She delighted in making stunning gowns that were talk of the area. She also served with the Bastrop Police Department, protecting young children as they walked to school. She was a faithful member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church and served on usher board, the kitchen, and cemetery ministries.

On August 17, 2022, surrounded by her children, Emma Lee Johnson Burrell shed her earthly raiments, traveled to a land "so bright and fair", and joined ""Suga," her parents, and loved ones who had gone before.  She leaves to cherish her loving memories: seven grateful children: John Willie (Juanita), Chicago, IL, Brisco, Jr. (Wanda), Crossett, AR, Edwina "Alice," Donnie Jean, Mary "Nell," (Willie), Sherman Lee (Jackie), and Linda Faye, all of Bastrop, LA; twenty-two grandchildren, forty-five great grandchildren, twenty-six great great grandchildren, six siblings, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
