"A God-Fearing Woman"

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Proverbs 31:26

John Willie Griggs and Mamie Williams Griggs lived in the small  southern hamlet of Mer Rouge in northeast Louisiana.  On Friday, August 1, 1941, the young couple was blessed with the first of five children.  It was a very good day.  To this beautiful baby girl was given the name Eula Mae. This union would have four other children: John Willie, Jimmy, Fannie, and Neomi.

As was customary in those days, the oldest child was like the parents, and the younger children had to obey them. Eula accepted this responsibility eagerly and helped raise her brothers, sisters, “Fannie’s children and Neomi’s children.”

There was never any doubt that Eula loved the Lord.  When she was only eleven, she confessed this belief and joined the Eudora Missionary Baptist Church.  She loved to go to church. She loved praising God through song, so it was only natural that she would join the Eudora Missionary Baptist Church choir. Singing and listening to gospel music made her spirits soar. Her clear melodious voice blended with the other voices in the choir, and folks had a “spirit-filled” good time at Eudora.

Eula was a mentor to the young people in the church. She taught them what “thus saith the Lord,” and how to live their lives according to the Good Book.  Her life lessons were remembered long after the young children became adults and had children of their own. Her no-nonsense mentoring endeared her to the children of the church. "Order My Steps" describes her wise counsel and the way she lived her life.

Eula attended Johnson Elementary School and Union High School. Young people often picked up pecans to get extra money in those days. Ms. Charlie was Johnny Newton’s grandmother and her pecan orchard was full of  sweet delectable pecans that she shared with friends and neighbors.  One day while picking pecans, Eula Mae met Johnny R. Newton in Ms. Charlie's pecan orchard.  That chance meeting led to a beautiful romance.  They married and remained a loving couple until God called Johnny home.

Eula Newton was well-known for her cooking.  Family and friends knew her cakes, pies, greens, fried chicken, roast, candied yams were dishes that made folks mouths water.  Her dishes were prepared with so much love that people sang her praises long after the delicacies were gone.

On August 1, 2024, on her eighty-third birthday to be exact, Eula Mae Griggs Newton, bid farewell to this world and joined loved ones who had gone on before.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness." Galatians 5:22

Your love,  joy,   peace, patience,  kindness, goodness,  and your faithfulness transcends time.

Rest In Love, Eula Mae Newton
