“Hawkeye was Her Name”

"Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue."

It was a Friday, August 5, 1932, in the small hamlet of Mer Rouge, Louisiana that Minnie Seay Hawkins and Levi Hollins became the parents of a baby girl.  Her name: Gladys Marie.

She attended St. Matthews School.  Because of her compassionate nature, she became a caregiver by profession.

Now, Gladys loved life. A devoted mother,  she loved spending quality time with her “blessings.”  Who were they?  Well, there was Amy, Johnnie, Dorothy, Hubert, Mack (Rockhouse), Brenda, Velma, a set of twins, Lucille, and M. Hollins.

Gladys had several hobbies. She liked listening to music, making her scrumptious teacakes, and her delectable butter rolls.

Gladys LOVED going to church.  The joy she felt when serving her God took her to heights unimaginable.  Songs of praise, spirit-filled sermons, and fellowshipping with her church family gave her so much joy.  Sitting on the second row at First Community was “her seat.”  This was understood!

Gladys had a nickname.  Folks called her “Hawkeye.”  Gladys Williams never missed ANYTHING.  She never drove a car a day in her life, but she had the ability to tell YOU how to drive.  Gladys did not mind altercations, either.  A stylish dresser, “Geh” (another nickname of endearment) loved her church dresses and her hats.  Gladys loved “The Price Is Right,” “The Young and the Restless,” and other television programs.  She had a sweet tooth and enjoyed going to Mer Rouge to get ice cream.

On the evening of October 12, 2025, Gladys Marie Williams bade farewell to this world at St, Joseph’s Nursing Home, and went home to be with her God.  Five children, Amy, the set of twins, Lucille, and M. Hollins, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory her grateful children, her siblings, her eighteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church members who will always remember the little lady with the beautiful smiled that some called “Hawkeye.”

“Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
