"The Songbird"

 Psalm 68:4–6

"Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the LORD; exult before him!"

December 18, 1953 was a Friday; a week before Christmas.  In the small hamlet of Bastrop, residents were busy  completing their Christmas baking, "making their lists and checking them twice." just to make sure they had that very special gift for each person on their list.  But, for Daisy Johnson and Jimmy Quillar, the gifts in the stores paled in comparison to the gift they received on that December 18, one week before Christmas.  There was no thought of baking or wrapping gifts for Daisy because her Christmas gift came in the form of a beautiful baby girl.  She named her Gwendolyn Faye.  Some say that people with the name "Gwendolyn" are often creative, artistic, compassionate, and caring.  Gwendolyn was all of these and more.

As a child, Gwendolyn "Gwen. as she was fondly called, always loved music.  You could always hear humming little tunes as she worked around her home.  She delighted in singing in her church choir at her beloved Greater Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church.  She blended her  beautiful voice with the renowned Bastrop Choraliers under the direction of Ms. Grace Reese. She was a Songbird!

Gwen received her B.A. degree in Business Administration.  She had the honor of being the first African American administrative assistant at Bastrop City Hall. She worked faithfully for Georgia Pacific Paper Company in Crossett, AK as a Lab Tech and in Payroll.

Gwen was married to the handsome, debonair Jackie Davenport, Sr.  They were blessed with four beautiful and talented children: Angie (who preceded her in death), Jackie, Jr., Misty, and Jimmye.

Gwen loved her church family where she sang in the choir. Naturally.  A civic-minded citizen, she loved people and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need.  She served as President of the Paragon Civic and Social Club whose main focus was helping those on need.

Gwen loved her friends. She was often seen with her "lady friends," out to eat, delivering food and toys to the less fortunate, presenting scholarships to deserving high school students, and presenting  checks to local schools.  She was truly a civic minded person.

Now, she loved her children, BUT, her pride and joy was her only grandson, Caleb.  And, of course, their was her canine companion, Nebo.

Gwendolyn Davenport was a  stunning, beautiful lady, who delighted in fashion,  jewelry, traveling, and giving unselfishly of herself to others.  Her generosity, her beautiful smile, her quiet demeanor endeared her to all she met. She was creative, caring, compassionate, artistic.

She was a Songbird!

She was Gwen!
