"The Seamstress"
"All the women who were skilled in sewing and spinning prepared blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine linen cloth."
Proverbs 35:25
The temperature on Tuesday, January 30, 1951 in Milwaukee, WI registered 24F. It was the coldest day recorded, but for Ora Lee and Napoleon Robertson, the chill of the day was no match for the warmth and joy that entered their home. On this day, they welcomed a precious baby girl. They named her Helen. On Saturday, September 27, 2024, Helen was welcomed once again, and joined loved ones who had gone on before.
Growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas and Bonita, Louisiana, Helen was a member of the 1969 graduating class of Union High School in Mer Rouge, Louisiana. She and her ten siblings grew up in a home filled with love, kindness, and a deep and abiding faith in God.
Helen confessed her faith in God when just a child at St. Mark Baptist Church in Bonita. When she returned home, she joined Greater Magnolia Baptist Church in Bastrop. Her smile and laughter were infectious; often spreading to other church attendees who simply enjoyed being in her presence. She willingly worked in various departments at Greater Magnolia. She was committed to serving her God.
In 1976, she met a handsome gentlemen, one Willie Jay Blackwell in Chicago, Illinois. In July of 1982, they were joined together in holy matrimony. They were blessed with three children: Deon, Christopher, and Marvel.
Helen's commitment and love for her family knew no bounds. She listened when a family member needed a listener; she had that shoulder when someone needed one to cry on, and she had that voice of reason when someone was confused or troubled. The Lord was her anchor. He gave her the strength she needed to help so many. The Lord was her strength.
Her smile, her infectious laughter will remain with all who were blessed to know her. Tuck a piece of Helen Robertson Blackwell in a small corner of your heart. Know that the legacy she leaves will be with loved ones and friends who were blessed to know Helen Robertson Blackwell.
Rest in Love, Helen Robertson Blackwell!
