Celebration of Life

‘But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

Katie Lee Kennedy was born on March 8, 1922 in the small village of Collinston to Holman Lee, Sr. and Susanna Washington Mitchell. Katie gave her life to God and accepted Him as her Lord and Savior. She joined the New Star Missionary Baptist Church in Collinston under the leadership of Rev. Secrease Dorsey. She worked tirelessly at New Star as an usher, deaconess, in the kitchen and hospitality departments until her health began to decline.

School for Katie and her siblings was in a church. As such, she attended the Jerusalem Church School.

On December 1, 1935 in an auspicious ceremony, Katie was joined in holy matrimony to Lawrence Charles (L. C.) Kennedy. For seventy years L. C. and Katie worked tirelessly together. They were blessed with nine children.

Katie was employed for many years as a housekeeper at the Louisiana Motel. But, she decided to leave that position and become a full time housewife/chief to raise her children. She was known for her amazing ability to prepare some of the most delicious and tasty dishes; not only for her family, but friends and neighbors alike.

On Monday, August 3, 2020, after her sojourning on this Earth for some ninety eight years, God sent one of his angels to bring his child home. Monday, August 3, Katie joined loved ones who had gone on before: her parents, husband, four brothers: Johnny Howard, Leonard Mitchell, Willie Wilson, Sr., and Holman Lee, Jr, one daughter- Magdalene Kennedy, one son- James Kennedy, one grandson - Anthony Kennedy, and one daughter-in-law Brenda Kennedy.

She leaves precious memories to be cherished by four daughters: Dorothy Mays of Mer Rouge, LA, Emma Jones of Collinston, LA, Helen Kennedy and Clara Kennedy of Las Vegas, NV; three sons Leonard Kennedy (Vera) of Cullen, LA, Lawrence Kennedy, Jr. and Frank Kennedy of Las Vegas, NV; twenty-one grandchildren; fifty-one great grandchildren; thirty-two great, great grandchildren; one great, great, great grandchild; a host of nieces and nephews; one daughter-in-law Earnestine Kennedy of Las Vegas, NV;  Special in-laws Frances Archie of California and Martha Hill of Bastrop, LA.  Katie and L.C. reared two grandsons Johnny Roy Kennedy and Tracy Kennedy, Sr. and two great grandchildren Starla Kennedy and Tracy Kennedy, Jr. as their own.
