"They Called Her Mu-Dear"
" A mother that prays for you is one that God hears."
On Saturday, January 9, 1937 in the small hamlet of Mer Rouge, Louisiana, Alonzo and Ellen Benton were blessed with a beautiful girl child. To this child was given the name Lonnie Estella. She would be their middle child.
Lonnie attended Johnson Elementary School. Her parents impressed upon her the importance of an education. It was understood that she and her brothers and sisters would "go to school, do what the teacher said and don't ever ever talk back." The values instilled in the Benton children would carry them into adulthood.
Now, Lonnie enjoyed watching westerns. She and her "life partner," Follie Gardner would spend watching Westerns like "Gunsmoke," and "Wagon Train." Cokes were her beverage of choice and she loved cake. She loved to cook and her favorites were neckbones, fried chicken, rice and gravy. Sweet Garret snuff was her quiet pleasure. "MuDear" loved to go to church and she loved gospel songs. She could often be heard singing her favorite hymn as she went about her daily chores.
Mudear was blessed with three children: Jerry, Virginia, and Booker T. But, the delights of her life were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When friends would visit, her conversations would always end with her recounting, with pride, what her "babies" were doing, where they were, or what they said. She loved them unconditionally and proudly shared their accomplishments with others.
On Friday, November 11, 2022, Lonnie Estella Benton joined her parents and many loved ones on that beautiful celestial shore. She leaves to cherish her memory: her grateful children: Elder Jerry Benton, Ms. Virginia Carol Benton Randle, and Booker T. Morrison, her grandchildren and great grandchildren who she adored, her lifelong partner: Follie Gardner, cousins, relatives, and friends.
