"The Steps of a Good Man"

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and: and He delighteth in his way". Psalm 37:23

Wednesday, March 25, 1936, turned out to be a very special day for a young couple in the small hamlet of Mer Rouge, Louisiana. Ivey, folks called him “Big Bill,” and his wife Elizabeth became the parents of what was to be their only child, a baby boy who they named Louis. As Louis grew, he was fondly called “Jack.” On Saturday, August 3, 2024, after living some eighty-eight years in Bastrop, Louis “Jack” Brandon left his earthly home and went home to be with his God.

Even though Jack was an only child, his parents instilled in him strong work ethics. When he was only seventeen, he joined the ranks of those employed by International Paper Company. Now, working at IP (as it was called) was a very prestigious job. Men and women employed by IP were held in high regard at that time because special skills were required by those employees. His ability to make and keep the woodyard operational made him one of IP’s most valued employees and earned him the position of Woodyard D Shift Supervisor. Pine trees that surround Bussey Brake, a well-known fishing spot were planted by Louis and still protect this famous fishing spot.

Louis married the love of his life, Miss Lessie Lawson. Their love affair lasted for some sixty-nine years until God called Louis home. They were blessed with five children: Johnny, Jerry, Patsy, Bobbie, and Lula.

“Jack’s” hobbies were numerous. He loved gospel music, especially Lee Williams. He enjoyed the outside, especially wild game hunting: deer, squirrels, rabbits. It was something about communing with nature that brought out the hunting spirit in him. However, when he was not outside, he enjoyed watching stories about the unknown, especially the Sci-Fi Channel.

Psalm 112:5 says, “A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. He is not focused on his own needs; rather, he is focused on the needs of others. A good man leaves an inheritance." So describes the life of Louis “Jack” Brandon, a man who provided for his family; making sure they were taken care of at all times. The inheritance that he leaves for his children, grands, great grands, great great grands, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends cannot be measured financially. He leaves a wealth of love, kindness, goodness and faith that will live for generations to come.
