"Education Was Her Passion"

Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”.

Alberta Scates and Henry Watkins Sr. lived in the small northeastern village of Oak Ridge, Louisiana. On the last Thursday in April, the 26th to be exact, 1934, they became the parents of a baby girl. They named her Lula Bell.  She was one of thirteen.

As a young child Lula loved everything education. She was quite popular with the faculty and students at Morehouse High School.  She participated in many of the extra-curricular activities.  In fact, she was voted as Morehouse Parish High School’s Homecoming Queen in 1955. After graduation, she attended Grambling State University and received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. But her quest for knowledge did not end because she also received her Masters +30 from Northeast Louisiana State University. After graduation from Grambling,  she returned home and was employed by the Morehouse Parish School System. She touched the lives of children in Bonita, Collinston, and Bastrop. She would  eventually go on to teach the children and grandchildren of thousands of children who still remember her warm smile and her caring spirit.

Shortly after graduating, Miss Lula Watkins met a dashing gentleman, one John Williams. On March 25, 1962, Ms. Watkins became Mrs. John Williams. They were blessed with three girls: Mattie, Veronica, and Zeritha.

As a young child she gave her life to Christ and shared her love for Him by serving in various capacities in her church. She used her love for teaching to share God’s Word with young and old alike.

A few days ago, Lula “Tee” Watkins Williams, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother passed from this world to a one of peace and every lasting joy. She has been  a friend, a counselor, a mentor, a guide, an  educator extraordinaire. She gave love unconditionally.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her wise counsel, and her beautiful smile: her grateful children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends. and thousands of students whose lives are better because of Lula Watkins Williams.
