"She Gave Wise Counsel"

"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue"   Proverbs 31:25–26

It was on a warm Tuesday in 1937, June 29 to be exact, in the small  hamlet of Mer Rouge, Louisiana, that Annie Mae Penny and Uriah Matthews were blessed with a girl child. They named her Florence.

Florence, even as young child loved  helping people.  She attended Morehouse High School.  Her love for people and her desire to help those in need prompted her to enter the medical field and become a Certified Nursing Assistant.  It was in that profession that she could care for those in need and encourage them to take care of themselves in a time that people of color did not always receive the medical attention they needed.

In an auspicious wedding ceremony, Florence  Matthews united in holy wedlock to Mr. Willie Lacy who preceded her in death.

It has been said that she had a  "green thumb."  She would spend hours in her yard.  Passers-by would compliment her on her flowers.  This gave her an opportunity to talk and offer wise counsel to young and old alike.  Now, some folks called her "the porch lady."  Those who knew her would use the opportunity to stop by, sit a while, and chat about "anything." Her outspoken nature  commanded the respect of all.  She did not mind "telling you like it was and what you needed to do to make it RIGHT!"

Affectionally called  "Mother," by many, Florence was a loving, but firm mother to Terry, Charlotte, Willie, Pamela, and Samuel.  She was extremely proud of her children and expected them to "do the right thing!"  If and when they strayed for "her teachings," they KNEW  they would have to answer to her.

Mother Florence Lacy was the epitome of dignity, elegance, courage, faith-filled and strength.  All of these words described Florence Matthews Lacy – mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. On Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 11:23 a.m. at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, Florence Matthews Lacy quietly left this world bound for a land so bright and fair.

“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’”
