"Set My Soul on Fire"

And the world passeth away, but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever. (1 John 2:17, NIV)

"It was one Tuesday evening back in 1942, that I accepted Christ, that I gave my life to the Lord. And He " Set My Soul On Fire."  This powerful soul-stirring song was Rev. Freddie Smith's way of ending a simple but equally powerful sermon.  It made chills course through your soul. It caused the blood to race through your veins. It stirred the heart. Hair stood up on your arms.  Your legs made you stand as you were caught up in the beauty of praising God.  There was absolutely nothing you could do about it. You were caught up in the Spirit.  He touched lives; he healed sin-sick souls.

He was born in a small hamlet called Mer Rouge, LA on Thursday, November 12, 1930.  His parents, Milton and Lilla Smith named him Freddie Lee. So began his walk with God that carried him on a spiritual journey that would last ninety-plus years.

Freddie and his siblings attended Sweet Home School.  Even as a young child, he knew that God had special plans for him. Those plans included marrying a beautiful young lady named Bessie Mae Hutchinson.  To this union seven children were born: Charles, Freddie, Jr., Jerry, Larry, Evelyn, Leslie, and Tammy.

Rev. Smith never met stranger.  He could be found on any given day inviting souls to Christ and talking to people about Jesus at the Quick Stop in Mer Rouge or Super 1. Visitors who attended his churches would stand on Sunday mornings and thank him for inviting them to the services.

He served as the spiritual leader at Mt. Union for over 30 years. At the time of his transition, he served as pastor of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and Travelers' Rest Missionary Baptist Church. He was also the oldest pastor of area churches, often guiding young ministers on their religious journeys. In March 2014, he received the prestigious Jerry Young Pastoral Ministry Award.  He also received his honorary doctorate.

On Monday, January 2, 2023, as he prepared to enjoy a Super 1 visit with family and friends, God beckoned Freddie Lee Smith. HE ANSWERED!

"Oh Lawdy, Please Jesus, please suh  Jesus! Set my Soul on Fire one more time.

Set My Soul on Fire One More Time."

Rest In Love,

Rev. Freddie L. Smith
