Rev. John W. Armstrong
"A God-Sent Man"
It was a Monday, and it was the 309th day of the year, 1940. The place was the small hamlet of Mer Rouge, Louisiana. The union of Pearlie and Talmadge Armstrong was blessed with nine children. This new baby was the fourth child of the nine. They named him John Willie Armstrong.
Now, John was an inquisitive child. He delighted in learning and he loved sports. He was a graduate of Union High School, home of the Dragons. He attended Grambling State University , earning a B. S. in Mathematics and a minor in Biology. He did further study at Louisiana Tech University.
He served his country faithfully as a member of the United States Army. On November 24, 1968, John was united in holy matrimony with a delightful young lady, the beautiful Edith Scott of Bastrop. Two children, Daryl and LaTerrika were born to their union. John was a devoted husband, father. and educator. He loved challenging young minds, pushing students to their full potential. He also loved teaching and preaching the gospel.
He loved traveling, fishing, and spending quality time with his family. Rev. Armstrong spent many hours watching religious programs on television and listening to gospel music . His favorite song was "Come to Jesus."
Early Christmas morning, at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans' Home, Rev. John W. Armstrong passed from mortality to immortality joining those loved ones who had gone on before.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife of fifty-five years, Edith Scott Armstrong; two grateful children: Daryl Armstrong (Eliza), Greenwich, Connecticut, Laterrika Armstrong Staten (Peter), Shreveport, Louisiana; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren; two sisters, Luller Whittley, (Dan), Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Kathleen Morris (Richard), Carson, California, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
