“The Bright Meadow”
"He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name". Psalm 23:2-3
It was a beautiful Friday morning in April; the 28th we’ve been told. that Ethel Mae Williams Eave announced to her husband, Johnnie that a blessed event would occur before night fall. He was puzzled for just a little while, but suddenly a light came on in his eyes, and he KNEW just what she was talking about. Sure enough that blessed event came in the form of a baby girl. Her name would be “Shirley,” biblically speaking: “Bright Meadow.” And, Shirley Ann Eave would be their bright meadow; their sunshine, that curious child with a thirst for knowledge and the world around her.
Shirley’s intellectual curiosity carried her through the Morehouse Parish School System, Grambling State University and Career Point College. She was constantly seeing ways to improve herself and excel. Because of the standards she set for herself, she refused to settle for mediocrity, concentrating on excellence. She instilled the same values in the loves of her life: Cierra, Ty’tiana, her grands, nieces and nephews, and the children who were lucky enough to spend time with her.
Even though she faced many challenges in her life, as a child, her love and trust in God and her strong family values helped her develop coping skills that helped her through those troubling times and made her stronger. She was a dedicated worker; always willing to help co-workers with tasks that may have been overwhelming for them.
Shirley loved cooking and trying new recipes on her family and friends. New delicacies, tried and true old favorites; it didn’t matter to Shirley. And, they heaped praise on her as she cooked, and cooked, and cooked.
Shirley enjoyed traveling especially with family members. Her most memorable trip was a family trip to Disneyworld in Orlando, FL. You would think the children couldn’t contain their excitement; but it was evident the Shirley enjoyed the trip as much as the children did.
Shirley loved music. It didn’t matter if it was spiritual or secular. She loved to dance. This “Bright Meadow” brought joy and smiles to those around her. She freely gave of herself and welcomed love from them.
On August 24, 2024 in Georgetown, Texas this “Bright Meadow” slipped quietly away to join loved ones who had gone on before. Rest in love, Shirley Ann. Your bright light will shine long past the time you sojourned on this earth.
