Velma Mae King

A “Celebration of Life” honoring the life and legacy of Velma Mae King, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at New St. Paul Church of God in Christ at 11:00 a.m.  Minister Timothy Battle will serve as officiant for the services. Following the services, the interment will be held in the Batts Chapel Baptist cemetery in Huttig, Arkansas. Visitation for Mrs. King will be held from 3:00 to 5:00, Friday, March 29, 2024, in the Loche’s Mortuary chapel. In a small hamlet in Union County, Arkansas, Strong to be exact, on Monday, March 1, 1937, Clyde and Ural Craig Staples were blessed with a girl child. They named her Velma Mae. On Thursday, March 21, 2024, at her residence on Frederick Street in Bastrop, Velma quietly joined those loved ones who had gone on before. She was preceded in death by one son, Johnnie.

She attended Gardner High School in Strong. She was a seamstress by profession and she loved gardening, canning, and of course, sewing.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons: Ollie Joe and Raymond King, Jr., of Portland, Maine; three daughters: Frances Moore, Myra Hill of Bastrop, LA and Dorothy Jones of West Monroe, LA, and one sister, Eva Louise Shaw of Hammond, Indiana, grandchildren, cousins, and many  friends.
