Bryce’s Bubbling Bravery

Tuesday, September 1, 2015 was just another hot summer day in Ruston, Louisiana at Northern Louisiana Medical Center. For most parents, summer vacation for their children was over and the children were back in school.  Peace and quiet AGAIN!  But for John “Dan” and Jasmine Wilson Boyd, the day was more than just another day. On this day, they became the parents of a beautiful bubbling baby boy. After much consideration, this beautiful baby was given the name Bryce Daniel Boyd.

But, their joy was short -lived.  A mere three months later in December, John and Jasmine were told that little Bryce had Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS).  His immune system was almost non-existent. Bryce’s big sister, Jaidan and his big brother Langston tried to help their little brother but they were not a match.

On February 19, 2016,  Bryce traveled to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for a bone marrow transplant without having a donor.   He had to be given multiple treatments to improve his Pancytopenia; is a medical condition in which there is a reduction in the number of red and white blood cells, as well as platelets, which all failed.  Bryce’s transplant team decided it was time to move forward with a transplant. The odds were all against him.  The team chose the best match available; a 4/6 cord blood donor.  On April 4, 2016, Bryce received a cord blood transplant from an unrelated donor.  He had a “Happy Cell Day”.

Soon; however, Bryce developed stage 4 graft vs. host disease.  He had no way to fight off infection.  He was given several rounds of chemotherapy and monoclonal antibody therapy.  But, it was not to be. On July 23, 2016, Bryce joined the other little angels in heaven where his smile will shine forever.

Knowing that Bryce is smiling on them forever, he leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted parents: John and Jasmine Wilson Boyd; two brothers, Langston Darby and John Boyd, one sister, Jaidan Boyd; his maternal great grandmother, Ida Lee Williams, his paternal grandmother, Eloise Fisher Boyd, and many cousins and friends who will always cherish the memory of their beautiful bubbling baby boy
